Mission Statement of the Lifespan Personality and Health Lab

Our purpose is to improve our understanding of personality and health across the lifespan. We strive to create a collaborative, productive, diverse, and inclusive research environment and to listen to and value the unique experiences of team members. We embrace open science practices, and disseminate our work with scientific and lay audiences in a rigorous and transparent manner. We aim to hold ourselves and each other accountable for taking action toward our mission and values.

We value:

    • Diversity, equity, and inclusion
    • Collaboration and collegiality
    • Rigorous, reproducible, and transparent scientific practices
    • Dissemination of findings to the research community and public

Diversity, equity, and inclusion: In line with the university’s mission to create a truly diverse and inclusive culture, we are working to build a lab group and a research program that is sensitive to historic underrepresentation, exclusion, and harm. We recognize that our sociocultural identities shape the research questions we ask, our interactions with others, and our career goals. We encourage lab members to share their unique experiences and perspectives, and aim to create a safe environment that fosters open, honest communication of personal-, equity-, and inclusivity-related concerns.

Collaboration and collegiality: We value collaboration both within our lab as well as with those outside of it. Within the lab, we endeavor to help, respect, and support each other personally and professionally. Outside our lab, we aim to collaborate with individuals within and outside our discipline with integrity, consistency, and and openness.

Rigorous, reproducible, and transparent scientific practices: We are deeply committed to preregistration, open materials, open data, and open science more broadly. We hope that such transparent and reproducible science will foster trust among researchers and the public.

Dissemination of findings to the research community and public: Our research focuses on several areas that are deeply personal to individuals: their personalities, their health, their socioeconomic status, and their racial and ethnic identities, among others. When communicating with the field and the public, we strive to clearly but accurately explain findings, their relevance, and their implications for individuals’ lives.
